What does "Clarity" mean?

Clarity indicates the extent to which a diamond is free from inclusions. Diamonds are formed in extreme heat and under enormous pressure – far below the earth’s crust. This very organic process means that almost all rough diamonds contain inclusions or surface imperfections. Cut diamonds that no longer exhibit any of these characteristics are considered particularly pure and valuable. The degree of clarity ranges from FL (flawless: free of inclusions and external marks) to I (imperfect: large, numerous, easily identifiable inclusions and marks).
